Club Officials 2024

Mr Andy Roberts
2024 Club President

Where did it begin, I was born at a young age and joined Maesdu as seven year old junior under the watchful eye of the Legendary Tom Jones. Attended his Saturday morning lessons in front of the old club house where some 70 odd youngster would delve into the wooden barrel full of Hickory shafted clubs, then be guided how to grip a golf club and then swing it. Only when he was happy with those basics would be allowed to hit a ball.

As junior I played many courses across North Wales as part of the North Wales Junior Alliance. Played in the Welsh Boys Championships at Wenvoe Castle and Holyhead.  I left school at 16 and went into family shoe business when my father had a stroke at the age of 52. It was intended that I would take the reins of the business whilst my father recovered, sadly that did not occur as my father died in 1970. Several years later after suffering from lack of playing partners, especially on a Wednesday afternoon I resigned my membership. In 1974 I married Hilary, we have two daughters. But neither showed any interest in golf. They both followed Hilary’s passion of horse riding.

I re-joined Maesdu in 1989, as with the light nights in the Summer I was able to play again. In the 2010’s I was elected to serve on the club council, taking on the role of Membership and Marketing chairman. I served on the Centenary committee and was instrumental in setting up the 100 club along with John Haydon. This was helping to fund the club’s Centenary, it continued for several years after 2015 , with Hilary’s assistance providing items for the club. I was elected to Captain in the Centenary year and again in 2020 due to unexpected circumstances.

I have been Captain of the Past Captains and now serve as their Secretary and Treasurer. I also organise the club’s team of Meet and Greeters in their vital role of the club. All these things have been possible when we retired our family shoe business in December 2018 after my 52 year tenure of a 96 year old business.
