2024 Ladies Captain
Mrs Karen Pettigrew

I was born in Ormskirk, Lancashire in 1963. At the time my dad was in the R. A. F. ,stationed in Adelaide, South Australia. When I was 3 months old my mum took me out to Australia where we lived for 15 months. We came back to the U. K. where we were stationed in Gloucestershire, Lincolnshire and finally Anglesey when I was 7yrs old. I attended Caergeiliog Primary School and Holyhead Secondary School where my love of sport began. I represented the school and Anglesey in athletics, netball and hockey. Outside of school I played badminton for R.A. F. Valley, Holyhead and Anglesey. I left school in 1981 and started work as a lifeguard at Holyhead Leisure Centre.

I started playing golf in 1994 on the 9 hole course in Llangefni then joined Holyhead Golf Club in 1996. My first competition win that year was the Lady Captains’ Prize.

I met my husband, Steve, Mr Captain, in 1994. We moved to Rhos on Sea in 1996 after Steve changed jobs, I continued to work at the Leisure Centre. We joined Maesdu Golf Club in 1998 after trying out the other courses in the area. Maesdu was by far the most welcoming and the course suited my golf. I used to play in the ladies competitions early and then go to work if I was on a late shift or if I was on an early shift I would play late afternoon so I didn’t really feel part of the Ladies Section. Six years ago I took early retirement and now work part time in Llandudno so I can play and be more socially involved. In the last few years I’ve been part of the very successful Shield Team and the Ping Mixed Pairs Team.

My Charity for the Year is Breast Cancer and with the support of the Ladies Section, I hope to raise as much as possible for such a worthy cause.

I am really honoured to be asked to be Lady Captain of Maesdu Ladies Section and I hope we have another successful year.
