2024 Captain Mr Steve Pettigrew

It’s a great honour to become club captain at Maesdu, a Premier Welsh golf club. I’m not a native of Llandudno but moved to the area in 1996. I was born in 1962 into a military family. My dad was stationed at RAF St Athan in South Wales, and I was born in Barry. I have no recollection of my time in South Wales as we moved not long after I was born, and so started what was to become a nomadic early life, moving to various military sites both in the UK and overseas every 2 or 3 years. We finally settled in Caergeiliog on Anglesey in 1975 when I was 13. I remained in the Holyhead area for the next 21 years, where I met up wife Karen. We moved to Rhos on Sea in 1996, when work led me to leave Anglesey.

I started my working life as an apprentice marine fitter/turner for Sealink in Holyhead before moving into the electrical industry, also in Holyhead. I then secured jobs in the automotive industry for 6 years before joining Airbus in Broughton in 2002, where I worked until taking early retirement in 2001 shortly after the COVID pandemic.

From my mid-teens until my early 30s, playing golf never really crossed my mind. Football was my game and I played at every opportunity for various team across Anglesey. I was then coaxed by some friends to try golf and was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable it was although I wasn’t very good. I first joined Anglesey Golf Club in Rhosneigr, before joining Holyhead Golf Club in 1992. I joined Maesdu in 1998 where I’ve been Handicap Secretary, Chairman of Competitions and been a member of several of our recent successful teams.

My Captains charity this year is The Alzheimer’s Society. The work they do in terms of support for sufferers and research into causes and cures for Alzheimers is critical. If you have experienced Alzheimer’s at close hand, you will understand the devastating effect it can have and why the work of The Alzheimer’s Society is so important.

I’m looking forward to my year as Captain and serving the club and the members in the best way that I can.

The Men’s Section

The Men’s Section enjoy a full and varied programme of Club Competitions throughout the main golfing season. There is a mix of both individual and pairs competitions that are designed to appeal to players of all abilities. Although our main competition day is Saturday we hold a number of Sunday and mid-week competitions to cater for Members who are unable to play on Saturdays. We also organise a range of individual and pairs knock-out competitions, away days and charity events.

When the main season finishes we continue to compete throughout the winter months with our popular Saturday and Sunday Winter Eclectic competitions which are based on scores from individual weekly Stableford competitions. We also field teams in the Caernarfon and District inter-club competitions.
